Guitar Workshops - Adult School of Montclair

Overall Structure of Sessions

These workshops are intended to help beginning and intermediate guitar players build on their knowledge of the CAGED chord forms while exploring acoustic pop and rock music that they’ve wanted to learn.  For review, the CAGED forms look like this:

We'll work to develop your ability to hear and then play songs that you're interested in.  Each session will contain a blend of the following: ear training, fretting hand technique, strumming hand technique, rhythm, music theory, and song transcription. You should come away from each session with a better understanding of this music coupled with some new ideas and techniques to add some sparkle to your playing.

We’ll listen and analyze examples from various artists in each class.  We'll walk through the songs together with our guitars as a group and then break off into smaller groups. I will provide handouts of chord diagrams, tablature notation, and standard notation for reference during each session but it is not necessary to be able to read any of these types of notation in order to enter the class. The materials will be explained when presented.  Each student will also receive a rhythm track CD to practice to at the first session.
